A damaged sewer line does not always require digging up and replacing the entire system.
Depending on the condition of the existing piping, sewer lining and trenchless sewer rehabilitation may allow sections of damaged sewer pipe to be rehabilitated while reducing the amount of excavation required.
However, sewer lining is not the correct repair for every damaged pipe.

After cleaning or descaling, another sewer camera inspection may reveal conditions that were previously hidden.

When Sewer Lining May Not Be the Right Repair

In an appropriate situation, the repair may involve:
Locate the damaged fitting → Excavate the failed area → Replace the damaged section with PVC → Properly connect the new piping → Prepare the remaining existing sewer → Install the liner into suitable piping
This allows the structurally failed portion to be conventionally repaired while reducing unnecessary excavation along portions of the sewer that can be appropriately rehabilitated.
Sewer Lining for Cast-Iron Pipes
Older cast-iron sewer systems are one application where trenchless rehabilitation may be considered.
Cast iron can develop:
Heavy scale
Corrosion
Cracks
Holes
Root intrusion
Rough interior surfaces
Deteriorated connections
Before lining is considered, the piping may require substantial cleaning or mechanical descaling.
The objective is to remove accumulated material, evaluate the underlying condition, and determine whether the remaining pipe configuration can support the proposed rehabilitation.
Not every old cast-iron pipe should be lined.

A conventional under-slab sewer replacement can potentially involve removing:

When the existing sewer is a suitable candidate for lining, trenchless rehabilitation may reduce some of this disruption.
However, the desire to avoid concrete removal should never override the actual condition of the pipe.
