A sewer line that backs up repeatedly may need more than another drain cleaning.


Cracks, holes, root intrusion, deteriorated cast iron, broken fittings, failed connections, improper pitch, and collapsed sections can all create recurring sewer problems. In some situations, cleaning or trenchless rehabilitation may be appropriate. In others, the damaged piping needs to be physically accessed and replaced.

The camera may reveal:

However, camera footage needs to be interpreted in the context of the entire drainage system.


Seeing one damaged area does not necessarily mean the entire sewer needs replacement.


Likewise, seeing one clear section does not necessarily tell us what is happening throughout every branch of a complicated system.


How Do We Find the Damaged Sewer Underground?


Once a significant defect is identified, knowing where it is located becomes important.


Compatible sewer camera equipment can be used with electronic locating equipment to help identify the approximate location of the camera or transmitter from above ground.


This can help determine:


  • Approximate defect location

  • Direction of underground piping

  • Changes in pipe direction

  • Potential excavation areas

  • Location beneath concrete or landscaping

  • Where additional access may be useful


We can also combine electronic locating with approximate camera distances, field measurements, visible plumbing, and information collected from other access points.


The objective is to reduce unnecessary exploratory excavation whenever possible.


What Is a Sewer Spot Repair?


A spot repair addresses a localized damaged section of sewer piping.


If the failure is limited to one fitting or a relatively short section of pipe, replacing the entire sewer may not be necessary.


A spot repair can involve:

  1. Locating the damaged area

  2. Accessing the piping

  3. Removing the failed section

  4. Installing new piping and fittings

  5. Properly connecting to the remaining system

  6. Testing the repair

  7. Reinspecting the system when appropriate


Depending on the location, accessing the damaged sewer may require excavation, concrete cutting, wall access, or other demolition.


When Is a Spot Repair Better Than Complete Replacement?


A localized repair may make sense when the surrounding piping remains in serviceable condition and the failure is isolated.


Examples can include:


  • One broken fitting

  • A localized crack

  • A damaged transition

  • A root entry point at a specific connection

  • A short failed section

  • A previous repair that has failed


However, repeatedly performing spot repairs on a sewer with widespread deterioration may not make financial sense.

Why We May Find More After the Sewer Is Exposed


Camera equipment provides valuable information, but there are limits to what can be determined from inside a pipe.


Once a damaged section is physically exposed, additional conditions may become visible.


For example, excavation may reveal:

  • Deterioration outside the camera's view

  • Improper connections

  • Previous repairs

  • Soil conditions affecting the piping

  • Additional sections requiring replacement

Replacing Cast Iron With PVC


When deteriorated cast-iron sewer piping is removed, appropriate sections may be replaced with PVC drainage piping.


The repair needs to account for more than simply connecting two pieces of pipe.

Why Sewer Fittings Are So Important

A damaged fitting can create a major opening even when the straight piping before and after it remains in relatively good condition.

Sewer Repair vs. Sewer Lining


Conventional sewer repair and trenchless sewer lining are not necessarily competing services.


They solve different problems.


Conventional sewer repair physically removes and replaces damaged piping.

Sewer lining rehabilitates qualifying existing piping from within.


A structurally failed fitting may require excavation while the piping beyond that repair may still qualify for trenchless rehabilitation.


That means some sewer projects may use:


Excavation + PVC Repair + Sewer Lining


Using more than one repair method can sometimes reduce unnecessary excavation while still physically correcting areas that require replacement.


Why We May Clean a Sewer Before Repairing It


Heavy buildup can prevent a clear evaluation of the sewer.


Before determining the extent of a repair, the line may require:


  • Drain cleaning

  • Hydro jetting

  • Mechanical descaling

  • Root removal


Once buildup has been removed, another camera inspection can provide a better view of the actual pipe condition.

What About Sewer Lines With Roots?
