However, when leaks become repetitive, water pressure problems affect multiple fixtures, or an aging piping system continues requiring repairs, replacing the existing water lines may become more practical than continuing to repair individual failures.


Whole-house repiping replaces aging or problematic water-distribution piping with a new water-supply system designed to serve the plumbing fixtures throughout the property.

Depending on the property, PEX can sometimes be routed through walls, ceilings, attic spaces, and other accessible areas while reducing the number of fittings required compared with certain rigid piping systems.

The specific installation still needs to be designed around the building and its plumbing requirements.


What About Copper Repiping?

Whether copper, PEX, or another approved material is appropriate depends on the particular project.


Homeowners should be cautious about assuming one piping material is automatically the correct choice for every property.


The existing building, water system, installation environment, accessibility, and project requirements should all be considered.


Repiping a Home With Water Lines Under the Slab


One major reason homeowners consider repiping is repeated failure of water lines located beneath a concrete slab.


Repairing an isolated slab leak may involve accessing the pipe through the concrete.

But if several underground lines begin failing, repeatedly cutting the slab to repair individual leaks may become disruptive and expensive.


In some situations, an alternative is to abandon problematic underground water lines and reroute new piping through accessible portions of the building.


This can reduce reliance on aging piping beneath the slab.


The feasibility of rerouting depends on the construction and layout of the property.


What Happens to the Old Water Lines?


When existing water lines are abandoned during a repipe, they are generally disconnected from the active water-distribution system.


The new piping becomes responsible for supplying the fixtures.


Not every abandoned pipe necessarily needs to be physically removed from inside walls, floors, or slabs.


Removing every piece of inaccessible piping could create substantial unnecessary demolition.

How Much Wall Access Is Needed for a Repipe?


This depends heavily on the construction of the property.


Some homes provide relatively accessible routes for new piping.


Others require strategic openings to reach fixtures and establish new water-line routes.


Access may be required at:


  • Plumbing fixtures

  • Shower valves

  • Behind cabinets

  • Walls

  • Ceilings

  • Water-heater locations

  • Laundry connections

  • Other concealed plumbing locations


The objective is generally to create the access necessary to properly install the plumbing without opening substantially more finished material than required.

That point is different for every property.


What Happens After a Repipe Is Completed?

Before the project is considered complete, the new water-distribution system needs to be tested.


Depending on the project, completion can include:


  • Pressurizing the new system

  • Checking connections

  • Testing fixtures

  • Checking hot and cold distribution

  • Inspecting for leaks

  • Verifying shutoff operation

  • Flushing piping where appropriate

  • Confirming proper fixture operation


Any required inspections or permitting procedures also need to be addressed for applicable projects.
